Serge Lutens Chergui Cologne Review by Man Loves Cologne

Hey everyone, it’s Sebastian with ManLovesCologne.com. I’ve got another great fragrance for you today, so let’s get started. This is chergui cologne ceview. Chergui by Serge Lutens! It’s fall in San Francisco – it’s fall everywhere, but fall weather is out and about, and it’s cold, rainy, and I’ve been using fragrances that are more suited for fall and winter; things like Thierry Mugler’s Angel for Men (A*Men), Pure Malt, A Taste Of Fragrance. All of those, so the one I’m going to discuss to you about is Serge Lutens Chergui so this is a chergui cologne review.

I’ve known about Serge Lutens for a while now, but I discovered Chergui a little late, and boy was I missing out, because this thing is an amazing, amazing, fragrance. The category is the gourmand fragrances, sweet and edible notes and it’s one of the most amazing fragrances that I have ever smelled; it smells so good that you almost want to eat it up, it’s that great. Chergui was released in 2005; it’s from the House of Serge Lutens, who’s got multiple, different fragrances, loads of’em, and they all have their own personalities He’s got several gourmand type fragrances and this is one of my favorites. So let’s open this up. Basically, it’s a simple bottle, beautiful design, logo with the S and the L in the front right here, of course, you’ve got the name right here, Chergui right there, I’ve got a serial number on the back here, and some basic information about the ingredients right here. When you open it up, I’ve already opened it up, it’s cellophane wrapped, but I decided to leave it closed for this, you basically get your little sprayer like this, and the bottle is like this. So you can see that I’ve used it up a little bit. But it’s a beautiful color fragrance, very thin bottle, it’s got a beautiful little top you can twist off, then on the bottom here, if you can see it, which I can’t see it, so you will probably not see it either, you’ve got the weight and  little more information about the fragrance and all that good stuff. This is 1.6 fl oz, 50 milliliters, and the majority of Serge Lutens fragrances are this size. There’s some that are different bottles and different sizes. But as you can see, it’s very similar in the front of the bottle; you’ve got the similar design here, Serge Lutens Chergui and then the logo here. Although this is a newer logo, the older bottles had more of a Shiseido logo, since Serge Lutens was with Shiseido, but this is the recent. I’ve also read online that the color of the fragrance, the juices are different from what it used to be now.

So let’s go over some of the notes in Serge Lutens Chergui. First of all, it was released in 2005, and the nose behind it is Christopher Sheldrake, and I’ve done some research with Serge Lutens’ fragrances and it seems Christopher Sheldrake is the nose behind most of them if not all of them. So the main note that you get when you spray Chergui is tobacco, it’s like, the first thing you smell. But it’s not a dirty tobacco leaf; it’s a very sweet tobacco leaf, because immediately after you get the tobacco leaf, you get the honey, that’s the second note, it’s honey, it’s sweet, it’s a really really sweet fragrance. So if you’re turned off by sweet fragrances, then Chergui is not for you; it’s just a sweet beautiful fragrance. It’s almost like a holiday fragrance, it’s perfect for holiday celebrations: baking in the house kind of smells is what I smell when I get this. Then we have iris as another note; and then, another one of my favorite notes, it’s sandalwood. I love sandalwood, and I get the sandalwood after the dry down, I don’t get it right off the bat. Then finally we have amber, musk, incense, which I also love, I love incense, but I don’t get the incense as strong or as powerful as I get the tobacco, and the tobacco leaf is basically, like I said, very sweet tobacco leaf. And then to finally, to finish off the notes, we have rose, which is also the sweet note I get, and then hay. So that pretty much sums up the notes in Serge Lutens Chergui. I absolutely love the name Chergui, it’s C-h-e-r-g-u-i, it’s such a beautiful name, I don’t know what it means, I wish I did my research at first and figured it out, but if any of you know, please don’t hesitate to put a comment on the video. Alright, so let’s spray some and see what it’s all about. Maybe three.

Wow. See, when I smell this, I get the tobacco, and then all of a sudden, it goes to honey, but I get the honey mixed with some spices. So what I’m getting first is like a very spicy, caramelly, maybe molasses-y kind of holiday cake. Maybe fruitcake, something like that, it just is a beautiful fragrance. So wow. It’s amazing. The juice is a little on the stickier side, not like your typical fragrances when you spray it, it slides, this is kind of, when I’m rubbing my wrists together, it kind of scrapes a little. It’s a different kind of juice. This is my very first kind of Serge Lutens fragrance and I’m happy to be dedicating it to my favorite Serge Lutens, although when I was in Europe last year, I go every December, and I was in a department store in Germany, and they had a whole huge display of Serge Lutens, and I was still pretty new with the fragrance at the time. I was smelling a lot of them, and they definitely have some really amazing fragrances. They do have a ginger one that’s also very gourmand, very tasty smell, it’s like you almost want to put it in your mouth, it smells that good. It just is one of those fragrances that you just want to eat it up. Not as good as the Chergui, but almost. There’s also a La Nuit, I don’t know remember the exact name, that’s another one of the better fragrances that I’ve smelled from Serge Lutens. So I’m smelling this again, the dry down, getting a little stronger tobacco, not as sweet. And then, it’s tobacco with a little honey and sandalwood along with some rose, is what I’m picking up here. So it’s amazing. It’s such a wonderful fragrance, it’s like you wanna just wear it all over. As far as the last, let’s see, I think I can get about 6 hours pretty good on myself when I put it on, I put like three or four sprays. Maybe you can carry it to seven if you spray it on your clothing, maybe sweater, shirt, it’s definitely going to stay with you longer. It’s not a powerful scent like Angel Men, it’s not one of those gourmand fragrances that’s going to totally cause a stir up in the room if someone is really .. hates fragrances, it’s not one of those fragrances. Even though I’m a huge fan of Angel, I absolutely love it, it’s one that turns off a lot of people, I don’t get why. This is more happier, it’s like sunshine, but cold sunshine. Cold sunshine with, walking by a house or a restaurant or a bakery where they’re baking baked goods – that’s what I get from Chergui, whereas, Angel Men is more of darkness, dark chocolate, chocolate milk, maybe with a little dirt, that’s what I get.

So I’m a huge fan of gourmand fragrances, and as you can see, I have a couple here as well, the Bond No. 9, New Harlem, is another one of my favorite fragrances in the gourmand line of fragrances – coffee – now, I’m a huge fan, I can’t get enough of it. Pure Malt – this is another one of my favorite fragrances. I can’t get enough of it. It’s like a rum and coke, whiskey and coke, it’s that yummy. And then A Taste of Fragrance, another one of Thierry Mugler’s. This one’s not as strong, but I love the initial spray, it lasts 3 to 4 hours, perhaps maybe 5, but not as strong as the other ones.

So Serge Lutens Chergui, if you haven’t really discovered Chergui or don’t even know anything about Serge Lutens, definitely try it out. It’s a niche line of fragrances, not a brand, so most people are not going to know about it; most stores will not carry it, here in San Francisco, I believe Barney’s carries it, Saks and Neiman does not carry it, Bloomingdales does not carry it either. So if you wanna order some Chergui, definitely click the link at the bottom of our video, it’ll take you right to where you can order it, and these will cost you about $100 a bottle, they’re about 90 in Europe, so it’s a pretty good deal here, with the conversion rate. So that’s all I can say about Chergui from Serge Lutens. If you ever make it to Paris, definitely go to Serge Lutens store. It is a beautiful beautiful store, I’ve seen videos and footage and photos, but unfortunately did not end up going there the last time I was in Paris, but I’m hoping I can do it soon.

Anyway, this is Serge Lutens Chergui again, it’s one of my favorite favorite fragrances:  yummy, good stuff, eat it, edible, tasty, lick it up, that’s all I get from this fragrance, it’s so much fun. Perfect, perfect for wintertime, the fall time. Warm weather, I’m sorry, warm clothing, and cold outside, is when this’ll be perfect for you. I can get away with wearing this in the summer time, San Francisco summers are pretty cool, but I still would not put a lot of it on me, I’d put a couple of sprays instead of three or four, but as I say with all my videos, I love wearing these colognes and fragrances anytime of the year, I just kind of customize it to the situation or the weather. Again, if you want to try some, click the link at the bottom of the video, it’s just right down there, and it’ll take you to the website and you can click there to purchase your own Chergui. Thanks so much for watching, give me a thumbs up please, and add any comments and let me know if you want me to do any reviews of any fragrances that you might want to see. Thanks again, this is Sebastian with manlovescologne.com, catch you with another video soon. Have a good one, goodbye.

Like your take on SL’s Chergui. I have never smelled this one, but it sounds interesting. However, from the description it may be a little on the sweet side for me.

You know it’s sweet but not that sweet. I like but if you are opposed to sweet frags might not work for you. Honey is a main note here and you can totally get it from smelling this. I love it.
